Qatar University relaunches teacher training degree

Qatar University is to relaunch its Bachelors of Education (B.Ed) programme after nine years, due to a growing demand for school teachers that can teach more than one subject, it was reported on Monday.

The programme was stopped in 1999 because of technical difficulties although degrees in physical education and art education continued, according to Qatar daily The Peninsula.

Its new B.Ed, to be introduced next Autumn, would meet international standards of higher education, and would be accredited by a foreign University, added Dr Hisa Mohammad Sadiq, Dean of the College of Education.

 “The course will be conducted in four tracks, early childhood, English, Arabic, Islamic Studies and social studies, and math and science,” she said.
 
“The course was stopped nine years ago due to many technical issues, now there is a dire need for those with B.Ed in the country. It is very important to have teachers who can handle three or four subjects at once,” Sadiq added.

All academic programmes at the University are designed according to the high standards established by accrediting agencies such as the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
 
The faculty is also working on a self-study for International Recognition in Teacher Education (IRTE) using the NCATE standards.

“All the college programmes are based on the vision to shift the future by introducing best teaching techniques,” said Dr Mickie Mathes, Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, College of Education.
