More than 1,000 new jobs are to be created at Abu Dhabi-based Emirates Aluminium (EMAL) during the next two years, the company announced on Sunday.

This year alone the firm will be doubling its staff from 620 to 1,350, as it moves from a construction to an operational phase, with production due to start in April 2010, according to COO Salman Dawood Abdulla.

Speaking on the first day of the UAE Careers Recruitment Fair in Abu Dhabi, Abdulla said 1,100 direct employment opportunities would be generated by the end of phase one of the project in the next two years.

Eventually the firm was looking to have 2,000 employees at EMAL, which is the largest single site aluminium smelter in the world, he said in a statement.

“EMAL is a growth story that is creating secure, long-term employment opportunities for both expatriates and UAE nationals seeking career development within a world-class industrial project," Abdulla said.

"As the UAE's largest diversification project outside oil and gas, the shift from construction into aluminium production by April 2010 signals a new demand for talented individuals from both the worldwide and domestic labour markets," he added.

The company was particularly interested in talented UAE nationals looking for career development in the fields of mechanical electrical engineering, environmental science and metallurgy,  he said.

EMAL is a joint venture between Dubai Aluminium Company Limited and Mubadala Development Company and was established in February 2007 with three employees.

Its full recruiting programme includes: mechanical and electrical engineering, environmental science, metallurgy, IT and process control, accounting, finance, commercial management, law, HR, production management, process engineering, logistics and maintenance services
