Qatar’s health minister has launched the country’s first healthcare quality department that will assess the level of services provided by all healthcare providers, it was reported on Monday.

The health minister Dr Aisha Al Zeyada said the department, which has actually been up and running for three months, will inspect and ensure the performance of all hospitals, both government run and private ones, plus all primary care centres in the country.

The department, made up of nine healthcare professionals, would also look into the general situation of healthcare provision across Qatar, and come up with short and long-term strategic plans, she added.

The department had been set up under a decree passed in 2005, however, it had taken until now to develop it as the country's healthcare system had had to be transferred from the National Health Authority to the Ministry of Health, Al Zeyada explained.

“We had not been able to fully establish the quality department due to the transition process,” she was quoted as saying in Qatar daily Gulf Times.

“Our structure, set up under the infrastructure ISO 9001 2008, is already finished and awaiting further approval from the Minister Sheikha Ghalia bint Mohamed Al Thani,” she said.
