DEADLINE FINES: Those that fail to register for an Emirates ID card on time will be fined.

Fines will be levied within the next few days on those who failed to register on time for their UAE national identity card, it was announced on Wednesday.

So far the fines of AED1,000 ($272).will only hit the national population who were meant to have registered with the Emirates Identity Authority (EIA) by March 31.

The deadline saw long queues at registration centres across the Emirates as people put in last minute applications, according to UAE daily The National.

A total of 7,500 UAE nationals were now registered, in part due to the large great turnout on Tuesday, WAM news agency reported.

On Wednesday, Darwish Al Zarouni, director general of EIA, called on all citizens to speed up registration and obtain identity cards before the fines were effective.

He stressing that the fines would be irrevocable.

However, Thamer al Qasemi, planning director for the EID said although the deadline had passed stood, the legal mechanism by which people could be fined was not yet in place.

Until it was, no fines would be imposed, he told The National.

“We need to have the legal authority to refer people to court or the police, and until that is in place we will continue to register people even after the deadline without imposing a fine,” he said.

“We are still going back and forth with other authorities to decide what we can do. There is no news yet on how long this might take.”

At the Al Barsha centre on Tuesday many of those waiting said they had got their cards more than a year ago, but had not realised they also needed to register their children.

Fines for late registration for Identity Cards
Posted by Nigel Moore, Dubai on Thursday 2 April 2009 at 11:40 UAE time

We applied for Identity cards via the Post Office last Sept/Oct and after chasing them regularly for feedback we were finally advised that our application had reached the Authority in January 09. We were told that everything was in order and we should hear back from them soon regarding an appointment to register. It's now April...............

mr. al Qasemi. your online registration system does not take new applicants and on the phone they said that i have to wait in line for however long it takes to get an appointment. your system is ridiculously complex and takes up way too much time without benefit to recipients.

E I D - There was a news some time back that the deadline for immigrants applying for Identity Card was extended up to 2012. Would like to have some more light on this one as people are being misguided and hence the delays in applying for the same.
Deadline for Expats?
Posted by Natasha, Dubai on Thursday 2 April 2009 at 09:07 UAE time

Would anyone be able to tell me when the deadline is for ex-pats? When I last spoke to the EID call centre they told me it had been postponed till 2010 but you never know as they keep changing the rules around!

I really don't want to pay anymore than I already have so if you could advise me on this I would really appreciate it.
