A taxi ride in Dubai will now cost a minimum of AED10, it emerged on Friday.
The increase comes after drivers complained that short trips wasted their time and hindered their efforts to hit their daily minimum targets.
While the starting fare will remain at AED4, transport chiefs have introduced the AED10 minimum fare with immediate effect, UAE daily Gulf News reported.
A Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) spokesperson told the paper that the final decision was taken on March 31 after consultation with the Dubai Taxi Agency and four other franchise taxi companies in Dubai. The new fare is effective immediately.

in the heat of the summer, i used to take a cab from where i live to Mall of the Emirates on fridays to get some food from Carrefour for the week, i used to pay 5 AED, i live close to the mall but can't really walk with heavy bags in a 50 degree temp. now i'll have to pay 10 AED which is the double!!
that was the straw, it's not about the money, it's about taking decisions like this without any consideration of it's effects, come on, we're in the middle of a financial crisis for god's sake and people are losing their jobs and getting lower salaries, what type of gov. is this?

Rta should reconsider hiking minimum fare, public utilities are meant for the convenience and comfort of public, therefore, this move is unfair & wil certainly hit the common man. authorities concern should primarily consider gorund realities, prior to taking such decisions. publics suffering & concern shouldnt be neglected.

I believe "Arabian Business" has provided a vent to all the capped concerns of a common man through this forum. I believe that their readership is a broad spectrum of "Literate and Socially Aware" people of all ethnic and educational backgrounds.
All of the readers writing their concerns including myself puts in lots of effort and time.......... Now who is benefiting from all this. Best scenario would be that RESPONSIBLE OFFICIALS from various GOVT DEPARTMENTS and AUTHORITIES read and analyze what is the general reaction from public. They can recieve 1st hand ground reality from the public itself, which can play a constructive part in improving their policies and implementation methods.
Arabian Business can also help the cause by contacting OFFICIALS in various DEPARTMENTS & AUTHORITIES and send them free subscriptions of this forum.

People who have complained about the rise, here is a suggestion, I walked twice in a week for 5-8 kilometers in Dubai to attend a prosperity consultancy meeting, as I didn't want to hire a taxi which is to get stuck usually in jams; also by then there were no taxis available as hundreds were already waiting, fighting, queuing up for just one, back in Feb-Mar '08.
5-8 kilometer walk not only was refreshing, even in summers, it was healthy.
Initially it was difficult like walking, alone, for straight 2 hours but then it was routine, my body adjusted and then I didn't even notice it as there are so many things to think about when you are living in Dubai, notably the job stress and insecurity.
So walking would, if not eliminate wholly, would reduce that stress and allow you to live longer.
So don't worry, take a bicycle and a FM radio and take a ride!
