Bahrain's unemployment rate remained stable at 3.5 percent last month in March despite the impact of the global slowdown.

Labour Minister Dr Majeed Al Alawi revealed the updated figures at the Arab Labour Conference in Amman, adding that Bahrain's employment programme was working to keep job losses at a minimum.

"The national scheme has been tailored to contain unemployment and create decent work opportunities for Bahraini jobseekers," he said in comments published by Gulf Daily News on Tuesday.

He portrayed a gloomier picture for Arab youth, with the rate exceeding 25 percent - three times higher among Arab women compared with males.

He also said employment and training schemes should target university graduates and other educated categories.

He cited plummeting productivity and low competitiveness and warned against dysfunctional educational and training systems which, he said, were too inefficient to keep pace with technological and administrative strides.
