The GSM Association has taken a green pledge to power over 118,000 base stations in developing countries with renewable energy by 2012.

The Association, which represents more than 700 mobile operators worldwide, states that presently less than 2,000 out of over 3 million base stations in the world are powered by renewable energy such as those harnessed by wind turbines or solar cell panels.

While the figure seems quite small, there are technical and financial factors that need to be considered for the viability of green power deployments. For example, solar and wind conditions might not be adequate enough to power higher load requirements at a mobile network site.

The situation is looking positive however; 50% of the operators interviewed by the Association in developing areas already have live green power sites while 39% have trialled the same.

Encouragingly, nearly all operators have admitted planning for green power.
