The Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa) announced the setting up of a new water desalination plant in Ras Al Khaimah with a capacity to produce 10 million gallons of drinking water daily, according to newswire WAM.
It will cover all the demand for water in the emirate for years to come, the newswire added.
The federal authority also announced the setting up of two desalination plants in the emirate of Ajman, each with similar capacity as that of the Ras Al Khaimah plant.
The new plants will address the water problems in Ajman.
According to WAM, Mohammad Mohammad Saleh, Fewa's Director General said the work on the Ras Al Khaimah plant and the first Ajman plant has already started. He estimates the Ras Al Khaimah plant and the second Ajman plant to get operational during 2011. However, the first Ajman plant will become operational later this year.
The total daily capacity of each of the three plants will be 10 million gallons of drinking water, Saleh said. He said that Fewa has been working hard to reduce salinity in drinking water, adding that it has recently decided to reduce the use of underground water in producing potable water.
However, Saleh assured that the current production of water should have been enough to meet all the local demands. At the same time, he urged people not to waste water that would cause shortage of water in the emirates.
