Three quarters of professionals in the UAE fear they could lose their job, with a quarter stating that they are ‘very worried’ about redundancy , according to a new survey.

The study carried out by recruitment website Bayt.com in conjunction with research agency YouGov of 10,000 people shows fears of redundancy are not limited to the UAE, with 65 percent of all professionals in the Middle East claimns they are concerned.

Further results show their fears are founded, with responders reporting that widespread redundancies had already taken place across the region, s a result of the global economic crisis.

A total of 43 percent of resonders across the ME stated that people had lost jobs in their place of work.

More than half (57 percent) of professionals in the UAE said their company had axed postions, while 50 percent and 48 percent of responders from Kuwait and Morocco reported job cuts.

Among the total, 21 percent said that more than 100 people had lost their jobs, while the largest proportion – 39 percent - said less than 20 people had been asked to leave.

However, despite the job cuts the threat of redundancy was still present -  40 percent of responders who stated that they were expecting their company to shed more jobs in the near-future.

Those form the Emirates cited the least optimism in the job market with 52 percent of professionals expecting further cuts.

“With the region in the full grip of the recession, the results of the survey demonstrate that the region's professionals are very much concerned both about their job security and that of their company,” said Amer Zureikat, regional manager at Bayt.com.

“What's very interesting is that the experience of professionals in different countries around the Middle East varies significantly - even in neighbouring countries," he added.
