Qatar Airways eyeing Tokyo route - report

Qatar Airways is looking to add Tokyo to its expanding network of destinations worldwide, it was reported on Tuesday.

The airline is eyeing the move as a new runway at the Narita International Airport is slated to be ready by March next year, officials said.

The airline currently operates daily flights to Osaka and has plans to introduce services to the Japanese capital, as Qatar and Japan have recently decided to expand their air services agreement, The Peninsula reported.

“We definitely like to fly to Tokyo but there are no firm plans as yet,” a source said in comments made to the paper.

A press statement issued by the Japanese embassy, meanwhile, said Doha and Tokyo had exchanged diplomatic notes on the amendment of air service.

“The step is a milestone for further development of aviation relations between the two sides,” Yukio Kitazume, Japan’s ambassador to Qatar, said in the statement.

Qatar Airways will operate passenger flights to Narita International Airport after the "commencement of the operational use of the new 2,500-metre runway scheduled in March 2010", the statement added.
