Gulf Air has placed a $270m order with GE Aviation, an arm of US conglomerate General Electric (GE) for engines to power 15 Airbus A320 aircraft.
Bahrain’s flag carrier signed a 10 year service agreement with GE Aviation for the CFM56-5B engines, which are scheduled for delivery between late 2009 and 2013, GE announced on Thursday.
The deal, valued at over $100m over the life of the agreement, includes the maintenance, repair and overhaul of the engines.
Gulf Air placed an order with Airbus for 35 aircraft last year including 15 A320 single aisle aircraft and 20 A330-300s.
The airline operates scheduled services to over 40 destinations in Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East and Far East from its base at Bahrain International Airport.

It is most telling that the MRO component of the Gulf deal is more than one third of the total cost, showing the aero engine makers actually give away the kit in the first place, knowing the buyers have to come back to them for the rubber bands for a decade after delivery. This is like Braun Sonic toothbrushes that are quite cheap to buy, but they scalp you for life for the replacement brushes. Sad world, really.
