Etihad Airways is offering UAE travellers bargain basement prices - such as AED200 ($54) flights to London Heathrow - following the launch of a new online sales promotion.
A range of special e-Deals will feature on the airline’s website every Monday and Tuesday and offer residents of the UAE during that 48 hour period access to Etihad’s very lowest air fares.
The new e-Deals – available only on the website - cover a selection of cities each week from across the airline’s global network and include short-breaks around the region as well as holiday destinations further a field such as Johannesburg, Melbourne and New York.
This week’s e-Deals include return economy fares from Abu Dhabi to: Bahrain, Damascus, Beirut and Cairo from AED40; New Delhi from AED100; and London Heathrow, Manchester, Munich and Casablanca from AED200. Booking must be made between Monday May 4-5 and travel completed by Monday May 18.
Peter Baumgartner, Etihad Airways’ chief commercial officer, said: “Part of the excitement of booking a last minute break is that you don’t always know exactly where you are going to end up until shortly before you travel.
“All we’re prepared to say in advance about this special getaway promotion is that people will have access to some incredible getaway deals, but to find out where to and for how much, they’ll have to keep visiting the website every Monday.”
The move comes as analysts claim Middle East airlines are struggling to fill seats as travellers hit with the credit crunch look to save cash by not flying.
Bill McKnight, associate director of consulting firm AT Kearney, said business and leisure travellers were thinking twice before booking flights.

What exactly is the point. What annoys me the most is that most promotions are based on the fact that they seem to believe the general public is dumb, wont mind their time wasted and dont bother to infomr themselves of what is going on in the world. If you read the advertisement it clearly says "Fly to ........ for only $40 return." This is obviously plain and simply a big lie!! Misleading would be a polite way of putting it considering one cannot fly without paying for the fuel and the tax!! I am very angry and frustrated at being treated like a brain washed idiot when it comes to advertising. Have some respect for the human race and stop trying to con us into using your sevices. I for one will NOT be using this promotion.

It is the fuel surharge that is the con here. EK quotes its fares including all fuel surcharges, and excluding airport taxes which vary from airport to airport. The Etihad e-fares exclude fuel surcharges as well as airport taxes. So add AED720 fule surcharge plus appox AED400 airport tax to Etihad's AED200 fare.
The adverts and pr releases are completely misleading.
And lets get into that surcharge.
Last summer oil was US$150 a tonne. Now it is US$50 a tonne. Yet there is still a surcharge. Is that surcharge 1/3 of the furl surcharge lats summer - was that surcharge AED2,160. I doubt it.
A little honesty would be nice. But unlikely.

I got a mail from KLM the other day. London return for 600 AED, also a good deal I thought.
Of course they neglected to mention that there is tax on top. plus a fuel surcharge. And these add-ons they failed to mention cost.... 1500 AED!!! So the total price was 3.5 times the price they were advertising!
Do they think such methods actually achieve anything more than just annoying the heck out of people by wasting our time?
Credit to FlyDubai whose adverts on the radio did make clear the prices they quoted were fully inclusive of all charges. That is how it should be.

Taxes ? What Taxes ? This is a tax free country.
BTW, just tried to book a ticket on Emirates (DXB - LHR) on same dates, and the tax quoted by EK is only AED 415.
Hmmm, isn't airline tax supposed to be big constant and fares which are variable ? Somebody please clarify.....
