Linux takes 1% share of web browsing

The Linux operating system has passed the 1% market share of web users for the first time, according to metrics firm Net Applications.

According to Net Applications, Linux share of client devices connecting to the web, reached 1.02% in April, up 61% from one year ago the first time the operating system has reached a full percentage point.

According to Net Applications web site, the Linux client base has expanded as systems have become easier to use, as well as shipping pre-installed on PCs.

The Windows operating system is still by far the most dominant OS on the web, with 87.9% of all web users connecting with a Windows device, although it has lost share both to Linux and to Mac. Mac’s share of the browser market has increased 31.8% since April last year to 9.73%, while Apple has also added share from iPhones, which increased 266% to make up 0.55% of web browsers, with the iPod Touch also accounting for 0.15% of the market.
