Research in Motion is working on upgraded version of its BlackBerry Storm smartphone, its co-CEO Jim Balsillie has revealed.

"We see this very large and untapped consumer market," Jim Balsillie told Reuters, adding that more than half of the company’s 25 million subscribers now fall into the non-corporate category.

There are few details on the new BlackBerry available at this stage but one of the most promising developments is the addition of WiFi support, which was a glaring omission in the original Storm that was released here in the Middle East last month.

A report on SlashGear claims that RIM will release the new smartphone in September this year. “While we’re not able to name our source, we can say that we’ve no doubts regarding the veracity of their information. The source gave us their assurances that the Storm 2 would have WiFi, and would be an even better Pro-consumer device than the first Storm,” it stated.

While many traditionalists criticised the Storm for doing away with a physical keyboard and not supporting WiFi connectivity, it still managed to become the third best-selling consumer smartphone in the United States according to figures by market research firm The NPD Group.
