Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan gave social media in the region a boost by engaging in a Twitter interview with the general public at the 2009 World Economic Forum (WEF) on the Middle East.

Her Twitter profile @QueenRania has been active for less than two weeks but already has more than 50,000 followers.

With her tweets touching on the recent papal visit to Jordan and thoughts on key sessions at the WEF which came to a close yesterday, she also responded to five questions posed by the general public on the popular micro-blogging website.

Her message to the world is to “bring down the walls.” To read the complete interview transcript, please click here.

Queen Rania is one of just a handful of world leaders who choose to directly communicate with the general public on Twitter, and also has her own website, YouTube channel and Facebook Fan Page.

The interview has been well-received in both Jordan and the Middle East, with The Arab Observer ecstatically writing: “Isn’t Queen Rania the coolest Queen ever?”
