Stellar scoreboards

Patrick Elligett speaks with Lorna Kerr, general manager of sporting display manufacturer Stella Vista Technologies, about the challenges involved with the company’s recent display installation project at the newly inaugurated Dubai Cricket Stadium.

A handful of staff from South African-based display manufacturer, Stella Vista Technologies, can just about call the UAE home, after completing a series of LED scoreboard installations across Dubai in recent months.

During its time in the emirate, Stella Vista has installed custom-made LED scoreboards at a hockey field, the International Cricket Council (ICC) Global Cricket Academy and the recently inaugurated Dubai Sports City Cricket Stadium. The Academy project involved the installation of a small alpha-numeric scoreboard that utilises a combination of LED and static lettering technology, while the hockey field installation simply involved displaying the score of both teams and the match-clock.

But from the hat-trick of projects, the 70 sq metre scoreboard installation at the Dubai Sports City Cricket Stadium is easily the most impressive.

From the company’s LB display series, the board is entirely tailored for cricket matches, utilising LEDs imported from Taiwan, manufactured specifically for this particular application.

Although Stella Vista custom builds displays for a variety of applications, the world of cricket remains the company’s core market, reveals Lorna Kerr, general manager of Stella Vista Technologies.

“We worked on a series of scoreboards for the 2003 Cricket World Cup in South Africa,” says Kerr.

“With that project we installed twelve scoreboards in a very short space of time.

“That was what really got the company well-known in the business. From there, we went on to install scoreboards in India, Abu Dhabi, the West Indies, England and in various African countries, so we can boast a substantial share of the market.

“We have more than 50 scoreboards installed around the world so we are by far the leaders in this field.”

The required materials for all three projects undertaken by the company were shipped to Dubai in a 40 foot container after being constructed, assembled and tested at the Stella Vista headquarters in South Africa.

Assembly and installation of the displays is usually a smooth three-day process, however in the case of the Dubai Cricket Stadium, delays erecting the supporting structure forced Stella Vista’s five on-location staff to be placed on standby for several days.

“The cricket stadium project was a little unusual, not so much in terms of the installation, but in regard to the structures we were working with,” explains Kerr. “We faced a number of problems with power supply, so the subcontractor wasn’t actually able to proceed with erecting the required structures.

Display domination

Based in Belgium, Barco is a visual solutions specialist catering to a broad range of markets. On top of its media and marketing arm, the company also has interests in the medical imaging, security, avionics and simulation sectors.

Barco combined forces with Stella Vista for the installation of the Dubai Sports City Cricket Stadium display technology, with the company providing the live video display for the stadium.

Barco has completed a number of projects in the region, and was recently recognised for its work on the series of visual displays in Dubai Mall, winning the Sound and Stage award for AV Installation of the Year.

The company maintains an active presence in over 90 countries worldwide and employs 3,500 technical, research and development, managerial and sales staff.
