TRANSPORT PLAN: Bahrain is planning to cut the number of deaths on its roads by introducing new rapid transport systems.

Bahrain is set to spend billions on a major transport system shake-up designed to help cut the number of fatalities on its roads.

Plans include a 180km public transport network comprising light rail transit, a monorail, a tramway and rapid-transit buses, the Gulf state's Works Ministry has announced.

Hi-tech traffic management equipment will also be introduced to reduce the number fatal accidents on the roads by 30 percent within 10 years, Gulf Daily News reported on Tuesday.

The monorail alone could cost BD3 billion and studies on how to finance it are already underway, with a completion target of 2030, officials revealed.

Speed radar, CCTV, message signs and a hi-tech traffic management centre will be brought in to cut fatalities on the roads, the paper reported.

A total of 677 tenders and projects totalling BD256.9 million were issued by the ministry last year to create a world-class infrastructure in Bahrain, said Minister Fahmi Al Jowder.

Superiority complex

Wow, it is so easy to criticize other countries while completely ignoring other examples of disregard to safety on roads in one’s own country?
Let me guess, you’re from Europe? I’ve seen a small economy car jammed with 5 drunken adults racing down a country road in Europe! In Bahrain one of my Expat friends was caught drunk driving and started verbally abusing the police officer when his car was impounded (how civilized).
You’re from Asia? In India road signs are either totally ignored or non-existent and the drivers relay on instinct!
Tell me how many accidents were caused by drunk drivers in Europe/Asia/Africa/America/Mars/Wonderland… etc, and let’s compare the percentage of accident in that place and in Bahrain!!
Yes the driving in Bahrain is not perfect, but let’s criticizes it from a logical point of view rather than a prejudice one! One of the gentlemen who posted a comment said that if the tram system would be driven by the same drivers (meaning Bahrainis) then the problem will not be solved, will let me tell you one thing, id pick the Bahraini drive over the drunk expat with a Superiority complex any time of day!!
'Best'?

Even if Bahrainis are the best drivers in the GCC (now there's a low bar to reach if ever there was one)...here's some information that will undoubtedly surprise the vast majority of drivers in the region.

Apparently, 'best' and 'fastest' aren't interchangeable terms.

Listen, if you don't like it here, just go back to your country, and take your kids there, instead of whining and moaning about traffics, you might wanna do that before they fire you, and you leave your furniture and car behind.
Gadeer, please let me know when you are driving

I need to know exactly when you are on the road, so I can stay at home, because it is exactly this blindness that causes all the deaths. I am "full of grudge", but only when I get side-swiped by someone in "traditional clothes" driving like a moron, not to mention maniac.
You also keep your children in the front seat, which is an abomination.
