Vodafone Group Plc's Qatari unit expects to have around 10,000 customers in the Gulf state by July and could expand elsewhere in the Gulf region in the future, its chief executive said in remarks carried on Thursday.

"If we are successful (in our endeavour), we will expand it into the region," Grahame Maher was quoted as saying in Qatari newspaper Al Raya.

Vodafone Qatar, which has broken the monopoly of state-controlled Qatar Telecommunications Co (Qtel), raised $929m in an initial public offering in April and plans to list shares on the Doha bourse before the end of July.

Asked if Vodafone Qatar was concerned about competition from Qtel, Maher said: "Competition here is easy because of the continuous change and turnover in the number of inhabitants."
