LIBYA ROUTE: Royal Jordanian Airlines is returning to Benghazi after a 30-year absence.

Royal Jordanian Airlines is resuming services to Libyan city Benghazi on Monday, some 30 years after suspending the route.

On Sunday, the Jordanian carrier said it was reintroducing the route, which will operate twice weekly, following an increase in traffic between the two nations.

The airline’s president and CEO Samer Majali added: “There is remarkable and active traffic of businessmen and students, and many Libyans come to Amman to get medical treatment.”

Flights will leave Amman on Mondays and Fridays at 12pm and arrive in Benghazi at 2.05pm. The return journey takes off at 3.05pm, landing in Jordan at 6.45pm.

Re-introducing Benghazi flights comes shortly after Royal Jordanian increased flights between Amman and Tripoli from three to four weekly services. The fourth flight was added in response to rising passenger demand.

Benghazi is the second route that Royal Jordanian has re-launched this year, with services to Brussels returning to the schedule in April.

The city has 1.5 million inhabitants and is the second largest in Libya after Tripoli, the Libyan capital, which lies 1,000 km west from Benghazi.

Important industries include oil refining, cement manufacturing, tanning, sponge and tuna fishing, and food processing.
