Court officials in Abu Dhabi have reduced the jail sentences of a father and stepmother convicted of torturing a nine-year-old girl.
The Abu Dhabi Appellate Court cut the prison term from 10 years to seven for the father and the stepmother of a nine year old Emirati girl, news agency WAM reported.
Announcing its verdict in the appeals filed by the parents and the Public Prosecution, the higher court partially upheld the lower court judgment that ordered the parents to jointly pay the child an amount of AED160,000 in damages.
The court threw out the appeal filed by the Public prosecution which called for a tougher sentence for the parents.

What kind of message does this give to the child who was the victim of the abuse? The trauma will have scarred this child for life.
If the courts penalties are tough it sends out a strong message to others who may practise the same crime. Then people will think twice before torturing an innocent child.
