Emirates Airline has awarded a $3bn maintenance contract for its A380s to the Engine Alliance, it was announced on Sunday.
The deal will see Engine Alliance providing maintenance, repair and overhaul services for Emirates’ GP7200 engines, which power the carrier’s five super-jumbos.
Engine Alliance, a 50-50 joint venture between General Electric and Pratt & Whitney, will also manage aftermarket services for the GP7200s.
Dubai carrier Emirates has 53 A380s and 250 GP7200 engines on order.
The GP7200 is capable of producing more than 81,500 pounds (363 kN) of thrust. It is considered the quietest, most fuel efficient engine for the A380 with emissions below current and anticipated regulations.
Apart from powering Emirates’ A380s, the GP7200 will also be used in Air France and Korean Airlines’ super-jumbos.
