BenQ has revealed that it will release smartphones and netbooks running Google’s Android OS next year.
The hardware vendor, which already offers Windows and Symbian-based smart phones, and the Windows XP-based Joybook Lite netbooks, will become the latest vendor to use Google’s smartphone operating system in mobile devices.
While BenQ is not part of Open Handset Alliance, the interest group founded to promote the Linux-based Android OS, the company is still free to use Android under an open source licence.
Android has been developed to bring more sophisticated solutions to mobiles, especially when using Google services such as Gmail and Google Maps.
No further details were available on the Android-based devices were available from BenQ at the time, which was announced at Taiwan’s Computex show. A number of vendors were displaying Android-based netbooks at this year’s event, including Acer and Asustek.
