GE Energy, a unit of US conglomerate General Electric (GE), announced on Thursday the signing of more than $500m of contracts to supply power generation equipment and services for the Al Dur independent water and power project, the largest power plant in Bahrain.
Bahrain’s Electricity and Water Authority is planning additional capacity expansion of the plant over the next 20 years to support the kingdom’s reported power demand growth rate of 7 to 10 percent per year, a release from GE Energy said.
When completed, the plant is expected to provide 1,250 megawatts of power, which would account for 30 percent of the kingdom’s electricity grid output. In addition, it would supply 48 million gallons of desalinated water per day.
GE Energy was supplying two steam turbines and four heavy-duty gas turbines, equipped with emission control technologies, it said. It had also signed a 20-year contract to service the turbines.
“The project is an example of the growing trend toward the integration of water and power production at a single site, especially in the Middle East where population and industrial growth rates exceed many other regions of the world,” said Joseph Anis, GE Energy’s region executive for the Middle East.
The plant is located in the Al Dur area on the kingdom’s south eastern coast.
