The UAE is embarking on a pilot project to improve conditions of contracted foreign workers from India and the Philippines, it emerged on Monday.

The country has signed agreements with both countries to launch the project, which aims to provide more transparency in the way in which expat labourers are treated once they arrive in the UAE.

The move was announced by Obaid Salem Al Zaabi, the UAE's Permanent Representative to the UN European Headquarters before the Human Rights Council in which he shed light on the steps taken to enhance contractual workers' rights, news agency WAM reported.

"The Government of the UAE is keen to improve the conditions for foreign workers and in this vein, it has struck an agreement with the Philippines and India," he said without elaborating on what the agreements would improve for workers.

A memorandum of understanding was signed with the Philippines and India on the sidelines of the International Labour Organisation's annual conference in Geneva on June 12, he added.

"The project is aimed at achieving more transparency with regard to the work and arrival of foreign workers in the UAE. In addition, the Government of the UAE also worked closely with the International Labour Organisation and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in this regard."
