The Abu Dhabi police has warned the public not to fall prey to extortions perpetrated by unknown persons by way of sending fraudulent text messages or telephone calls.
The chief of the Organised Crimes Counter section at the Criminal Investigation Department of Abu Dhabi Lt. Col. Dr. Rashid Mohammed Burashid said that over 18 cases of this type were reported during the last two months, newswire WAM reported.
In an incident of this kind unknown persons sent text messages randomly to people telling them that they have won a large amount of money in an international draw, it added.
The sender of the message asked the people to transfer credits to his mobile account to facilitate speedy claiming of the prize won. There were also telephone calls from anonymous persons claiming to be international lottery officials and a number of people have been cheated, WAM quoted Burashid as saying.
