$133m deal as Saudi aims to meet rising power demands

A $133m contract has been awarded for the construction of an electricity substation in Saudi Arabia, as the kingdom tries to meet the increasing power demands of its population.

Alfanar Construction Company has been awarded the contract for the construction of the power plant in Riyadh.

The project comes as part of Saudi Electricity Company's plan to further enhance the power supply capacity to meet the growing demand for electricity in Riyadh, particularly the north west region of the city, where the project will deliver electricity to new facilities.

The new station will be linked to several existing substations and the 380 kV overhead transmission lines in Riyadh and is due for completion in June 2011.

Alfanar Construction Company is currently executing several key projects for the Saudi Electricity Company valued at more than $1.2bn in different parts of the kingdom.

Among the most important projects are the 380kV substation project at West Makkah at a contract to enhance the electric capacity and to meet the growing demand for electricity in the holy city, particularly the central area of the Holy Mosque.
