Qtel, the largest mobile carrier in Qatar, on Sunday cut its international roaming charges, benefiting its overseas customers.

Launching its new SmartRoamer service on Sunday, the company said pricing would now be fixed within the GCC, MENA (Middle East and North Africa), the Americas, Europe, Asia, Oceania, and Africa and the rest of the world.

Qtel has reduced calls to Qatar from anywhere in the GCC for pre-paid and contract customers to QR2 ($0.55) a minute.

In order to qualify for the deal, customers must use Qtel’s preferred international partner in GCC countries.  Some of the carrier’s tie-ups include Etisalat in the UAE and Kuwait’s Wataniya.

State-backed Qtel aims to become one of the biggest mobile phone companies by 2020 and currently has a presence in 17 countries.
