Commuters travelling on the Dubai Metro will be able to use other forms of transport with the same ticket, the Roads and Transport Authority confirmed on Monday.
During a press conference, the RTA unveiled its ‘Nol’ tickets, of which four will be available depending on what class of travel passengers wish to take. They can be used on buses, water buses and for paid parking zones, as well as the metro.
However, the RTA will introduce time limits for people wishing to use different modes of transport without incurring additional charges. For example, someone using the metro then travelling on a bus has 30 minutes transfer time before having to pay another fare.
The metro will have different cabins for gold class card holders and passengers with standard tickets. There will also be a cabin for women and children if they wish to travel separately from men.
RTA chairman Matter Al Tayer insisted the option for women was voluntary and not compulsory.
“There is a special cabin for women and children but if you want to sit with your wife and children you can sit where you like [in other cabins],” Al Tayer said. “Some ladies want to travel on their own; they want their privacy when with their children so we cannot mix.”
The Nol tickets are split into four categories: silver, blue, red and gold. The silver option is a top up card that can hold AED500, with amounts deducted when passengers travel on the metro or other transport networks. The initial charge for this will be AED20, of which AED14 will be available on the card as an initial balance.
Blue card holders have the same benefits as well as additional ones, such as topping up the card and checking previous transactions online. They can also join a loyalty rewards programme and sign up for automatic top up. Children, seniors and people with special needs will receive discounts.
The gold class card allows holders to travel in the most comfortable cabins, although facilities are still unknown. Finally, the red card is a paper ticket costing AED2 that can be topped up for use on 10 journeys or five daily passes. After that, customers have to buy another card.
All cards, available at ticket offices and vending machine in metro stations, are valid for five years apart from the red ticket, which only runs to 90 days.
Single trip fares for passengers buying normal tickets and travelling up to 3km will cost AED2, while journeys across three zones will be set at AED6.50. The prices for passengers with gold tickets are AED4 and AED13 respectively.
The fares are different for passengers carrying ‘Nol’ cards, with adults paying AED1.80 for up to 3km journeys and AED5.80 across three zones. Gold card holders will pay AED3.60 and AED11.60 respectively, while senior citizens will be charged 90 fils and AED2.90 for 3km or triple zone travel.

I think this is the best thing ever in Dubai, the pricings are very reasonable as well as the distributions of the carriages, some people are never happy even if the metro was free of charge, all I can say to them is "if you were in another country you will not have such clean and new trains, so please stop winging and use the train, your lives were not butter before, using the bus and the taxies. Well done RTA and keep up the good work. I have a company car but I will defiantly use the metro and relax in the morning reading the paper or a book and get to work happy and relax, also I don’t have to be with all the inexperienced drivers on the road.

As it is mentioned that the transfer time between change of mode of transport for not to be charged additional, 30 minutes is too short for my experience as it is very difficult to get a bus within that time. It is ok if the bus frequency is increased and availability of seats in the bus is there. If not then what?

Good to hear the news of Metro Rail Connectivity and fare information from RTA. The green flag off day is very near. On road commanders are very cautious on that day and at-least couple of weeks too. Insurers are waiting ‘happiest day’ of 09-09-09.
Anyone can suggest how we can reduce traffic pressure on roads from Rolla-Al Nahda-Al Mulla-Qisais! towards DXB and Vice versa. (Heart Attack Rates definetly increase if you travel through this road in the morning and evening).

...and will definitely ride if the RTA figures out the first mile / last mile dilemma.
I envision gliding on my Segway to the station, boarding a train with my Segway, getting to my destination and gliding to my meeting....and then the return journey back the same way.
I know of at least 20 other people who would like the same option and this solves so many issues.
Hoping for some good news from the RTA!
