Sun Microsystems has appointed Middle East IT industry veteran Marc Heger as general manager for the MENA region.
At the same time the firm’s managing director for the territory has moved to Sun’s emerging markets division, to identify new business development opportunities for the vendor to pursue.
“Sun’s customer and partner community in the MENA markets are set to benefit from the regional knowledge and expertise that Marc Heger brings to his new role as general manager. He has a first-hand understanding of the business and IT challenges facing companies across this geography,” said Johann Muller, systems LOB director for emerging markets at Sun.
“The insight and skills that Chris Cornelius brought to his previous leadership role within Sun MENA will also be put to good use for our client base in emerging markets,” added Muller.
Heger has previously been in charge of Sun’s sales team in the UAE and Gulf region, among other roles at the firm. As MENA general manager he will take responsibility for overseeing operations in the Middle East, focusing on driving customer satisfaction and ensuring profitable growth for the company and its partners.
The vendor reveals that it has outlined initial goals for Heger that include promoting awareness of the business benefits of cloud computing in the Middle East and continuing Sun's focus on open source software initiatives here.
Earlier this year Sun Microsystems was purchased by software giant Oracle for $7.4 billion, a deal that on the face of it has yet to significantly impact the way that either firms operate or interact with their channel in the Middle East. At the time Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz said of the merger, which was unanimously backed by Sun’s board: “The transaction stands to utterly transform the marketplace — bringing together two companies with a long history of working together to create a unified vision of the future.”
