Alcatel-Lucent has recently been involved in a comprehensive IP overhaul of the Ministry of Culture and Information in Saudi Arabia.

According to the vendor the solution that it has deployed includes a complete revamp of the legacy system at the Ministry to a full end-to-end converged communications system that features voice, data, contact centres, Wireless LAN and unified comms in a multi-site environment.

Jan Zuurbier vice president for Alcatel-Lucent’s enterprise activities in emerging countries, said about the deal: “The Alcatel-Lucent solution is enabling the Ministry of Culture and Information in Saudi Arabia to build a reliable and secure IP network, it empower users with a unified communications system and mobility and reduces [the Ministry’s] carbon foot print while saving money.”

The solution comprised the delivery of the vendor’s OmniPCX Enterprise to be used by over 5,000 users across six of the government department’s locations. In addition to that Alcatel-Lucent’s OmniMessage Voicemail 4635 dual language with My Messaging users, OmniVista 4760 Network topology, directory and accounting and the vendor’s Voice over Wireless LAN solution where included in the project.

Alcatel-Lucent says that it has tailored the solution to the Ministry’s business requirements and assisted them in building the architecture of the project. Further to the aspects already described, the vendor also built a network infrastructure based on its OS9000 and OS6850 series which is intended to provide uninterrupted application delivery across the Ministry’s distributed network. The OS equipment provides power over Ethernet to support IP Phones and WLAN access points in all of the Ministry sites.

It must be noted that Juniper networks has also carried out a high-performance networking implementation at the Ministry of Culture and Information which saw it install, switching, routing and security technologies. Juniper made the claim that the Ministry has seen 40% cost savings as a result of the implementations.
