Low-income families living in Bahrain who fall behind on their electricity bills should not have their power cut off, the country's prime minister has announced.

And those families who have already been cut off for non-payment should have their electricity supply restored to their homes, Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa added.

He ordered the temporary reprieve for low-income families registered with the Social Development Ministry, as he chaired the weekly Cabinet meeting, Gulf Daily News reported on Monday.

The Electricity and Water Authority was also ordered by the Premier to work out a reasonable schedule for the families to catch up on their arrears.

"The gesture, which follows the Premier's directives, reflects the government's keenness to help vulnerable social categories," Cabinet Affairs Minister Sheikh Ahmed bin Ateyatala Al Khalifa told the paper.

Parliament had earlier submitted a request to the government to take the plight of low-income families into consideration.
