HP and UNIDO expand GET-IT training program

HP and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) have announced the launch of twenty new training centres in the MEA region under the GET-IT program.

The program, part of HP’s social investment strategy, aims to provide IT and business related training to young people to encourage entrepreneurship. The program is open to youth between the ages of 16 to 25, and includes IT skills related to business areas such as finance, management, marketing and technology management.

Kandeh K Yumkella, UNIDO director-general commented: “The UNIDO-HP partnership aims at addressing the high level of unemployment among young people in developing countries by integrating them into the labour market through successful entrepreneurship.

“HP and UNIDO have been working together to provide IT technology and training to promote innovative uses of information and communication technologies to support entrepreneurship, help encourage economic development and create new business opportunities. It is essential to keep expanding this initiative to reach as many communities as possible and to continue assisting countries in Africa and the Middle East in educating their young generation in IT,” he added.

UNIDO works to identify non-profit organizations that can they can partner with locally to deliver the program, and then supports them from there, with the GET-IT program rolled out to 100 centres already.

John Hoonhout, managing director for HP Middle East, said: “HP believes that entrepreneurship is vital for the economy and that young people can play a major role in creating their own businesses and their own jobs. The GET-IT training courses combine entrepreneurship education with practical hands-on experience in using IT to enhance young people’s professional skills.”

The new centres that will deliver the GET-IT program in the Arab World are: Nahdet El Mahrousa, General Federation of NGOs and Foundations (GFNF), and The Suzanne Mubarak Women’s International Peace Movement in Cairo; Business Enterprise Support Tools Foundation, Giza; Zayed University, Abu Dhabi; Dubai Women's College and Entrepreneur Business Village, Dubai; Human Resources Development Fund (HRDF) in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam; Institut de Formation Professionnelle (IFP) and Institut National Spécialisé de Formation Professionnelle (INSFP) in Algiers, and PlaNet Finance in Casablanca.
