Qatar and Poland sign 20-year gas deal

Qatargas and Polish state-owned energy company PGNiG have signed a deal which will supply one million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the Eastern European country.

The agreement is for a period of 20 years from 2014-2034.

HE the Deputy Premier Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah hailed the deal as “significant,” adding that Qatar may further invest further in the country in “various sectors”.

It is Qatar’s first deal with the Eastern European country, which must now build an $848.2m terminal in order to receive the supplies. The deal will meet around 10 percent of Poland’s domestic demand.

Poland, which currently meets 30 percent of its gas needs from its own resources, 40 percent from Russia and the remainder from a variety of sources, has been looking for further ways to diversify its supplies.
