Abandoned and unwanted dogs in Kuwait are finding news homes half way across the world in the United States.
The Animal Friends League of Kuwait, which opened in 2005 to place stray animals of all sorts into homes in Kuwait, has started looking further afield for prospective owners.
Working with the Bangor Humane Society, at least 10 stray dogs have been found new homes in the New England city.
“A lot of dogs are considered vermin over there (Kuwait),” Dawn Weber, the local Humane Society’s adoption counselor, told the Bangor Daily News.
“Most of them are desert dog mixes. They tend to have the long muzzle, shorter legs and hair … and they tend to have really nice dispositions.”
The Kuwaiti animal charity covers all the costs of relocating the pets, including paying someone to accompany the dog on their journey.
“They don’t just ship them over. They have to come over with somebody,” Weber said.
Comments left on the newspaper’s website criticised the move in light of the current economic climate.
One person wrote: “Here's an idea, let's fly across the world to donate a dog.”
