Oman’s Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) has completed deployment of High Performance Computers (HPC) from Sun Microsystems for use with its physics application. University researchers can use the machines to speed up complex computational tasks and make short work of complex engineering problems.

The entire system has been custom-built to SQU certifications, and the university claims it required little time to configure and deploy. The system includes Sun 6000 HPC blade clusters using Xeon processors with the overall workload being handled by Sun Grid Resource manager.

Dr. Muataz Al-Barwani,HPC Facility Coordinator, Sultan Qaboos University, said: “The university has an extensive IT infrastructure that provides the necessary IT facilities and services that a modern day university requires. Most of these facilities and services are housed and provided by the Universities’ Centre for Information Services (CIS) and its staff. But, despite the available facilities and services, a need still existed for a high performance computing facility.”

“This particular solution will pave the way for a new generation of computationally intensive applications to be utilised at SQU. It will help run more sophisticated simulation in parallel, enabling SQU to the pursuit of progress in science and engineering to advance their educational initiatives,” confirmed Peter Avakian, HPC Technical Lead at Sun Microsystems.
