Striking Al Ain cabbies win new pay deal

STRIKE ACTION: Tawasul taxi drivers in Al Ain have won a pay rise after protesting over new monthly targets.

Taxi drivers in Al Ain have won a pay rise after going on strike in protest at an increase in their target for takings, it was reported on Thursday.

About 30 drivers with Tawasul said they were having to work up to 18-hour days in a bid to hit new targets of AED8,500 ($2,300) a month, compared to AED6,000 previously.

The drivers demanded a reduction in the target, as well as an increase in their present fuel allowance of AED70 per day, UAE daily The National reported.

They went back to work after Tawasul agreed to pay all its Al Ain employees a higher allowance over the summer, the paper added.

Tawasul’s general manager, Abdullah Kassab, drove to Al Ain on Wednesday to meet the striking drivers while four officials from TransAD, the taxi regulator, also investigated.

He met five of the drivers, one representing each of the nationalities involved, and struck a deal which resulted in drivers calling off their strike.

He told them that those who do not meet the new target but at least made AED7,500 would receive AED1,150 per month for the next two months until the summer ends, compared to the previous AED1,000.

Strangely they have targets despite the fact that they can't stimulate demand by standing in the street and making a sales presentation nor they can give extra discount to passenger if they travel a longer distant than what they are targeting. None of these sales techniques/demand stimulation tools are relevant to this industry.
