Avnet Technology Solutions has turned to the former boss of IT reseller Qatar Datamation Systems to spearhead its business in the Middle East.

Jamal Qaffaf, who led a team of 80 staff at Qatar Datamation - an Emitac joint venture company - took over as general manager of the distributor's Middle East operations at the start of this month.

Qaffaf will be responsible for overseeing Avnet Technology Solutions' strategy for enterprise computing products, covering the GCC, Levant, Egypt and Yemen. He will report directly to Avnet's UK-based senior VP for sales in EMEA, Sukh Rayat.

"Jamal's experience in the IT channel business in the Middle East, as well as his proven success record, will serve us well expanding our business in the region," commented Rayat. "He will help our business partners to accelerate their success by creating and delivering effective solutions that address the business challenges of end-user customers."

In addition to working for Qatar Datamation, Qaffaf has also held other roles at Emitac and Leo Systems, giving him an excellent view of the channel landscape from a partner perspective.

Avnet Technology Solutions is an operating group of US-based Avnet. During fiscal year 2008 the group generated US$7.6 billion in revenue. Its line card in EMEA encompasses a wide range of niche and mainstream enterprise products from more than 50 vendors, including HP, IBM and Symantec.
