Kuwait is set to spend up to $3.1 billion on building eight new hospitals by 2016, it has been announced.

Dr Fadhel Safar, the Minister of Public Works and Minister of State for Municipal Affairs, said the construction would take place in three stages, beginning with Al-Jahra hospitals which will include maternity facilities.

The minister also indicated that tenders had been submitted for these hospitals and that the winning bid would be revealed once the necessary approval papers and consultation agreement had been signed, reported KUNA News Agency.

The third stage will include buildings near Al-Razi, a natural therapy centre, Ibin Sina and children hospitals, adding that that deals for these proposals would be signed before the end of this year and that all hospitals are expected to begin operations between 2015-2016.

Safar added that about 500 hospital beds will be added to hospitals in the country in a bid to reach the required number of beds for the country's population.
