US wireless operator AT&T is set to deliver telecoms services and infrastructure for Al Madina A’Zarqa, a major urban development in Oman, after signing a memorandum of understanding with project developer Blue City Company 1.
Under the agreement, Blue City Company 1 will work with AT&T to develop telecommunications services to be rolled out to residential customers and businesses in the development, a 32 sq km city being constructed in Al Sawadi, a 60-minute drive from Oman’s capital Muscat.
AT&T will provide expertise in product development, business modeling and technical support for IP-based technologies including IPTV and video on demand, as well as communications infrastructure design and network management.
“The development is very important to the country; it will be an integral part of the transformation that is going to take place in Oman, in line with His Majesty’s Vision 2020,” said Mark Fuller, chief technology officer of Blue City Company 1.
“Our technology strategy will have an impact at national levels in terms of an economic and social development perspective providing a unique experience as a connected community,” he added.
When completed, Al Madina A’Zarqa will consist of 20 five-star hotels and housing for 200,000 residents, and is expected to help expand Oman’s tourism sector significantly. BCC1 was created to deliver the first phase of the project.
