A non-governmental manpower agency should be formed to become the sole recruiter of Indian housemaids in Bahrain, according to Indian ambassador to the kingdom Dr George Joseph.
The agency would take over responsibility from employers as the housemaid’s sponsor and would replace the multitude of existing manpower organisations currently recruiting workers, said Dr Joseph.
"We want a body to be set up to protect both sides - the employee and the employer," Dr Joseph was quoted as saying in a report by Bahrain daily Gulf Daily News.
"We want the power of sponsorship and employer separate. So the agency is the sponsor and the family are the employer. Then she can choose her employer.”
Dr Joseph said he had sent his suggestions in writing to the Bahrain Ministry of Labour in March but had not received a reply.
