In this week’s issue we take a closer look at Saudi Arabia’s many power and water projects, which are either under construction or are to be announced over the next few years.
The government-owned Saudi Electricity Company is looking to spend US $28 billion (SAR105 billion) on power generation projects over the next three years. And this follows a rising demand for power in the Kingdom, which has been spurred by a $400 billion five-year government spending scheme. It is also believed that more than a million homes are to be built over this time in Saudi Arabia. This week’s Top 10 feature, lists the biggest power and water projects, which are under construction across the Kingdom.
Also, after all the drama surrounding the steel export ban in Saudi, it appears that steel makers won’t be exporting steel any time soon, despite the ban being lifted. According to a source from Hadeed, who wished to remain unnamed, the Saudi Government has put in some terms and conditions that has made it “unreasonable” to export steel.
August 31 CW awards nomination deadline
On another note, the Grand Hyatt in Dubai has been chosen as the venue for this year’s Construction Week Awards, which will be held on Wednesday, November 4.
We constantly strive to make the Awards better, and this year, we’ve added a number of people awards to commend those who are the driving force behind the success of the big construction firms in the region; after all it’s the links in a chain that make it what it is.
Some of the people awards include health and safety officer of the year, project manager of the year and construction manager of the year.
Health and safety has been a topic that CW has aggressively pursued since its inception and continues to follow even now. I expect this award to be one of the most hotly contested ones and will see the best man, win.
So with a nomination deadline of August 31, you have just a little over a month and a half, to submit your details. All nominations must be submitted online and no physical nominations, via post or messenger, will be accepted.
Criteria for the Construction Week Award nominations can be found online at www.ConstructionWEEKonline.com/cwawards/award_categories.
Judges for the awards will be announced next month.
Conrad Egbert is the editor of Construction Week.
