Umm al Qaiwain could establish its own university following demand from parents for an educational institution in the emirate, it has been reported.
Education authorities are carrying out a study, which will be completed by the end of the year, allowing for a university to open in 2011, officials told the National.
Abaid al Qauod, director of the education zone, told the paper the study would consider whether a new school should be set up from scratch or allow a foreign university to launch a branch campus.
Parents said they did not want their children to travel long distances to go to university because of the negative effects on their studies and the UAE’s dangerous roads.
Sultan Rashid al Khalijia, the head of the Umm a Qaiwain Health Authority, said: “His Highness has already promised that [the emirate] would provide land for the university and once the feasibility study is completed by the education zone, the Ruler would show us this land.”

I believe the Umm Al Quwain government should turn this crisis as an opportunity for them to shine. The potential for Umm Al Quwain is actually huge but sadly they don't seem to see it. Ruler of that state should be proactive a lot is missed in this place like - mall, variety of hypermarket, amusement center, park ( they have only one ), fastfood chains and restaurants, good nurseries and secondary schools etc - facilites in general. If they know how to turn things around for them a lot of expats would consider living in their state as it has good beaches, serenity and calmness, wide area and fresh air which is seldom seen most around this days. UAQ is very good in bringing up children and family enviroment. For a start make those rents so low that everybody can hardly resist it, even if it is a long drive people will still consider it. They should start making noise to be noticed even those expats have lived here years have not heard nor seen the state. UAQ Government hope you will see and read this comment.
