Oman sets new targets for private sector ‘Omanisation’

Oman announced a slew of new targets for the 'Omanisation' of private sector jobs, early this week.

According to the Gulf News daily, the country’s manpower minister Shaikh Abdullah Bin Nasser Al Bakri issued a ministerial decree setting an August 15 deadline for private companies to submit their plans for meeting these targets.

Omanisation is a government policy initiative that intends to secure private sector employment for Omani nationals.

An estimated 40,000 young Omanis exit the education system every year, seeking employment primarily in the fast-growing private sector, the Gulf News noted.

The new targets for Omanisation in the private sector include all professions and job categories in the private sector. For the mainstay oil and gas sector, nationalisation has been set at a minimum of 90 per cent. Similar levels have also been prescribed for the key banking, and hospitality and tourism sectors, the daily added.

Localisation targets for the contracting sector have been set at 30 percent, while 50 per cent of engineering jobs in consultancy firms must now be earmarked for Omani nationals, the newspaper said.
