Airport International Group (AIG), whose shareholders include Abu Dhabi Investment Company and Kuwait’s Noor Financial Investment Company, has reported a 13.39 percent increase (23,478) in aircraft movements in June at Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA), near Amman, compared to the same period last year.
The first six months of this year meanwhile saw an extra 28,428 passengers passing through the airport, representing 1.4% growth over the first half of 2008.
Figures show that June 2009 was the highest month for passenger traffic over the period with 426,286 travelers, an increase of 5.28% compared to June last year.
In a statement, Curtis Grad, CEO of AIG said: "We have been working actively to attract new airlines to QAIA, as well as facilitating increased frequency of existing carriers serving QAIA, which has positively contributed to the traffic growth of the airport.''
Grad added that the Middle East region continues to experience positive growth, despite the worldwide economic crisis, and is positioned to lead the global recovery.
Meanwhile, the rehabilitation and expansion works at QAIA continue with the new passenger terminal extending over 85,000 square metres.
AIG, under the terms of a 25-year concession agreement with the Jordanian authorities, is responsible for the operation of the airport, the rehabilitation of existing facilities and the construction of the new terminal.
