Du, the UAE’s second telecom operator, and Hong Kong based PCCW Global, have joined forces to deliver a converged IP network spanning the Middle East, Europe, Africa and North America for Dubai-based broadcaster, MBC Group.

The IP network uses an MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) technique, which creates virtual links between the various distant nodes in the network to boost overall performance.

The system, which replaces less reliable multiple connections, will allow MBC to stream content to multiple locations while conserving bandwidth.

MBC will use the network to transfer of data and video content between its head office in Dubai and its global branch offices. The network will also provide improved connectivity for the various business groups within MBC, from production to high definition video conferencing.

Marc Halbfinger, CEO, PCCW Global, said that the network had been developed specifically for the applications and traffic required by the broadcaster including “aggressive thresholds for availability, packet loss, latency, and jitter.”

“Our network professionals have worked intensively with MBC across the network development cycle – including planning, design, installation, and ongoing monitoring and management of the new MPLS network,” he said.

Amjad Edris, MBC group director of engineering, added: “MBC considers the collaboration with Du and PCCW Global as a long term strategic alliance and we acknowledge the level of dedication and support that Du and PCCW Global have provided towards the setup of a complex set of requirements geared towards maintaining MBC’s reputation as the leading Arabic channel.”
