Sony’s new e-reader range.

Sony announced two new e-readers on 5 August 2009. The company introduced the Reader Pocket Edition and Reader Touch Edition, which will be available at the end of August at SonyStyle.com or Sony Style stores and which are part of Sony’s ‘Reader Line’. New York Times Bestsellers and other titles will be available on both readers from Sony at US $9.99.

The Reader Pocket Edition comprises a five-inch electronic paper display that comes in a chassis and which is available in a range of colours, such as navy blue, rose and silver. The device retails at $199, is said to store 350 standard eBooks and it’s claimed that it can run for two weeks on a single charge.

The Reader Touch Edition retails at $299; comes in red, black or silver and has more features such as a menu-driven six-inch touch screen panel that enables such functions as page turning, highlighting and note taking with the swipe of a finger.

The handwritten notes can be taken with a stylus pen or even the virtual keyboard. The Reader Touch Edition also has an onboard Oxford American English Dictionary and expansion slots for both the Memory Stick Pro Duo cards and SD cards.

Both of these e-reader models feature what Sony calls the E Ink Vizplex Electronic paper display that is said to mimic the look of ink on papers. Sony’s eBook Library software 3.0 now includes support for Apple Macintosh computer and PCs and the result is that you can then read any Adobe PDF, Microsoft Word and some other file formats.

Currently, the eBook Store from Sony is only available to those in the US. This further allows users in the US to access more than one million free public domain books when users download the Sony Library software.

The Sony e-Readers are just the latest e-readers to be released on the market after Samsung last week announced its new e-reader, the SNE-50K. Both these e-readers are set to compete with the Amazon’s Kindle e-reader.
