Qatari telecom operator Qtel said it is on track to deliver residential broadband at speeds of up to 50 mbps in some parts of the country by the end of the year, after completing the first trial phase of its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) service.
The operator is working with various developers to provide FTTH in the Mesaieed and West Bay Lagoon areas of Qatar, where it aims to launch commercial services by the end of the year.
The service will initially provide speeds of up to 50 mbps, with the capability to upgrade further at a later stage. Once the initial roll-out to Mesaieed and West Bay Lagoon is complete, Qtel plans to expand the service across Greater Doha and other parts of the country.
Qtel said it will also deploy a “Fibre to the Building” service, which will provide fibre to apartment blocks and multiple housing developments, which can then be used by all residents.
“Fibre to the Home will make a major difference in the lives of everyone in Qatar, bringing some of the fastest-speeds and best quality networks to residents and businesses,” said Khalil Al-Emadi, executive director, networks, Qtel.
“We are looking at the complete transformation of the Broadband services experience in Qatar, and – given the progress witnessed so far – we are confident that many people will be enjoying this service before the end of the year.”
