Toshiba has embraced the Blu-ray DVD format and finally applied to become a Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) member after months of supporting the rival HD-DVD video format.

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) presently has more than 180 members, with its Board of Directors consisting of Apple, Dell, HP, Hitachi, LG Electronics, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony and several other technology and electronics firms.

HD-DVD, which was also backed by Microsoft, has been tossed aside by many top Hollywood studios including Twentieth Century Fox and Warner Bros. entertainment in favour of the Blu-ray brigade.

“In light of recent growth in digital devices supporting the Blu-ray format, combined with market demand from consumers and retailers alike, Toshiba has decided to join the BDA,” an official statement from Toshiba read.

The company will come out with Blu-ray Disc (BD) players and notebooks with BD drives sometime this year, adding that dates for launches in specific regions are ‘now under consideration.’
