Increased power cuts could occur in Kuwait during Ramadan because of the rise in power consumption coupled with ageing plants, officials have warned.
The Ministry of Electricity and Water said areas across the country could be plunged into darkness as rising temperatures put extra demands on the network.
Consumption levels have already reached 9,783 megawatts daily, out of an available 11,000 megawatts produced by local power plants, the Kuwait Times reported the Arabic paper Al-Qabas as saying.
A ministry official told the paper that problems at local power plants and substations, due to the age of equipment, were expected to continue adding further strain on demand.
A series of “scheduled power cuts” will take place, the official said.
The ministry said that it is planning to increase the number of maintenance checks being carried out to try to lessen the problems at plants which in turn effect supply.

POWER WASTE ALL OVER THE COUNTRY

There is NO POWER SHORTAGE in Kuwait. Power is wasted, at least 30-40%, due to lack of themostats, keeping lights on in buildings at night, stealing by residents that haven't paid thier bills in 20 years, and on and on.
The maintenance is s joke. Spare parts are ususlly counterfeit from China.
We had a pwer failure last week and it will get much worse.

The ministry of electricity needs to start paying their clients who have contracts with them to avoid such outages. Instead of killing them with red tape all the time and unfair contracts that end up hurting the country and ultimately the people. Also, the parliament needs to stop butting into the affairs of the ministry. In particular the 2007 emergency power contracts. The parliament has frozen the Ministry.
