DUBAI COURTS: The UAE and the UK ratified an extradition treaty last year. (AFP)

A Dubai resident accused of stabbing a man to death has become the first person to be extradited from the UAE to the UK, it has been reported.

Jeleel Ahmed, 27, was flown back to the UK last week to face murder charges and was arrested immediately, West Midlands Police told the National.

“The man was successfully extradited from the United Arab Emirates, landing at Heathrow Airport on Thursday August 20. This is the first time somebody has been extradited to the UK from the UAE,” they said.

Ahmed is accused of being part of a gang who attacked and killed Shanwaz Ali, 23, outside his home in Birmingham in January 2006.

Police arrested and questioned Ahmed, but were forced to release him due to lack of evidence. He fled the country shortly after, the paper said.

Ahmed was working in Dubai and living under his real name. He was arrested by Dubai Police in 2008, soon after the British government requested his extradition.

He remained in prison in the UAE until he was flown back to Britain last week.

Ahmed has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on September 17.

The UAE and the UK ratified an extradition treaty last year, which states that a wanted person may be extradited to either country. The UK declines to extradite people facing the death penalty.
